Susan Sarandon Bio
It was the year after the 1968 Democratic convention and there was a casting notice for a movie with a variety of roles for the kind of young people who had disrupted the convention. Joe (1970) was auditioned in New York by two recent Catholic University graduates. Chris Sarandon, an actor who was trained in acting, was not selected. His wife Susan was offered a part as Susan Compton. She plays the daughter of Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick). In the film Dad Bill kills Susan's drug dealer friend and then befriends Joe (Peter Boyle)-- the bigot who is working on an assembly line , and who collects guns.Five years later, Sarandon made the film where fans of cult classics have come to recognize her as Janet who is entangled with transvestite Dr. Frank n Furter in The The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). Over 15 years after beginning her career Sarandon was finally active in a campaign for a role that was a hit, Annie in Bull Durham (1988), travelling at her own expense from Rome from Rome to Los Angeles. Sarandon said that "It was such an amazing script... it did away with many myths and challenged America's definition of what success is". "I went to the studio together with Kevin Costner and shook hands with some of his sexy assistants prior to getting back on the plane. Tim Robbins, her Bull Durham (1988), supporting actor was her first lover. He had two sons by 1992. This placed Sarandon in an awkward position. She left her home in order to pursue characters that were extremely difficult. This led to four Academy Award nominations in the 1990s and for the best actress in Dead Man Walking (1995). Louis Malle's Atlantic City (1980) was her first Academy Award nomination.
