Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born on 21 November, 1985 in Malaysia is an actor and comedian. Chieng
is currently a Senior correspondent on The Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is
the creator and lead actor on the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student. It
debuted on ABC Australia as well as Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was
born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng was
brought up in Singapore and the United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire,
from 1989 to 1994. Chieng performed with Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy
festival in 2013. Chieng was invited to audition for the Daily Show's
correspondent job two years later. He was named one the top 10 comics to watch
by Variety in July 2016. In October of 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The
Daily Show to react to a Jesse Watts Fox News segment that many considered
racist. Chieng broadcast an expletive-laden critique of the conservative
network's segment. Chieng also visited New York City's Chinatown in which
Watters had mocked the residents. The viral clip was covered in Slate and
Washington Post. In his young years, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. Even
though he's lived in Australia for over 10 years, he does not possess permanent
residency or citizenship in Australia. Chieng laughed in 2018 when he said it
was cynophobic. However, he later claimed that he was 100 % not scared of dogs.
